The citizen science project Dawn Chorus has been nominated for the Grimme Online Award 2025 – specifically for the special prize for artificial intelligence! This is a great incentive for the Dawn Chorus team to continuously expand and further develop the app and online offering...
The Grimme Online Award is one of the most prestigious awards for online offerings in the German-speaking world. The special prize honors projects that not only implement the use of artificial intelligence technically, but also creatively address socially relevant issues.
“The nomination for the Grimme Online Award 2025 shows us how much interest there is in our approach to combining nature observation, science, and digital technologies. Without the enthusiasm and commitment of our community, this success would not have been possible,” says Anastasia Czerny, project manager.
Dawn Chorus invites people worldwide to record and share the morning birdsong with their smartphones. The collection of recordings helps to make biodiversity audible and create a growing archive of birdsong in times of global change.
The recordings benefit nature conservation, biology, and birdwatching in equal measure: automatic data evaluation using machine learning methods allows large quantities of recordings to be analyzed efficiently and made available for research. At the same time, it remains clear that powerful AI cannot replace human expertise—only the interaction of technology and specialist knowledge can produce scientifically reliable and socially relevant results.
