Naturkundemuseum Bayern strengthens SNSB as its own department

19 April 2023

The process of establishing a new natural history museum in Bavaria is entering the next phase: The Naturkundemuseum Bayern will strengthen the Staatliche Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen Bayerns (SNSB) as its own department as of January 1, 2023.

The previous project BIOTOPIA - Naturkundemuseum Bayern is thus officially part of one of the oldest and, with around 32 million collection items, also one of the largest natural history research collections in the world.

The SNSB is thus taking a further step together with the Collection, Research and Science Communication departments on the way to creating a contemporary research museum that carries its scientific content into society. In the new Naturkundemuseum Bayern, the Museum Mensch und Natur (Man and Nature) and the interactive learning space BIOTOPIA Lab, together with the regional museums in Bamberg, Bayreuth, Eichstätt, Nördlingen and Nuremberg, will increase the visibility of the natural sciences in Bavaria and demonstrate the SNSB's excellence in collection-based research and innovative science communication at national and international level.
